Rescued NYC S-1 Electric Receives First Coat of Paint

(August 24, 2024, as posted by Stan Madyda on NYCSHS-Members Groups.io)

We worked past sundown on Friday night to get as much of the S-1 painted as we could for a railfan photoshoot on Saturday.  A big thank you to Alden Burns for getting the volunteer help together the past six weeks.  And thank you to all those who helped.  The S Motor will have lettering applied at some point.  Lots of touch up still needed, but it looks good from 20 feet.  At some point in the next several years, it will be repainted once body repairs are made, plywood taken off the windows, and doors allowed for some well lit interior photos.  Looks like a good winter project to clean out the interior.  At this time two years ago, Paul Marsh, Dave Pickett and I were trying to figure out how we would get the S and T Motors off of Beacon Island in Glenmont, NY to safety.

The paint job is meant to be temporary.  I'll see how it holds up over the next few years but any future removal of paint is gong to have to be with some sort media blasting.  We got down to bare metal in many places using wire wheels and surface finishing tools.  Not fun.  Donations are still needed to keep the project moving forward.  A fair amount of money was spent on new tools and paint.  Can't wait to see what the electric bill is going to look like.
